Spotlight: HANAC's Affordable Passive House Project Overview

NY Engineers is proud to provide our services to the Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee (HANAC) to aid their mission of providing affordable housing to those in need.

HANAC is a social services organization based in New York City, dedicated to bringing affordable housing, job and vocational training, counseling, and educational opportunities to underserved communities within 4 of the New York boroughs.

For this project, NY Engineers aided in the development of their most recent building in Corona Queens. This building consists of an early childhood development center, as well as 68 rental units, intended to house low-income senior citizens.

To complete the project, NY Engineers provided design review consulting and electrical design, and ensured the building’s MEP systems were designed to maximize efficiency while minimizing overall costs.

NY Engineers also utilized passive house standards to ensure overall building efficiency and affordability for residents. Passive house construction is intended to help achieve maximum comfort for occupants while minimizing the need for an HVAC heating system. To achieve Passive House Certification, our team equipped the building with passive solar design, superinsulation, advanced windows air-tightness, efficient heating and cooling systems, and other efficiencies in order to maximize energy efficiency for the life of the building and keep long-term costs down for owners and residents.

The building is scheduled to begin construction soon, and it is expected to open for resident use in about a year and a half.
